Urge Congress to Pass a Budget Deal and Increase Education Funding
The fall is giving us plenty of opportunity to engage with our Members of Congress. Given the vast amount of items facing the Congress now, including (but not limited to) hurricane relief efforts, DACA reform, tax reform, and expiring programs, little momentum has been built around raising the budget caps established in the Budget Control Act of 2011 (BCA). This law limits the amount of defense and non-defense discretionary spending (done through the appropriations process), and the caps decrease each year. Many programs, including education programs, will be cut or eliminated to comply with the statutory limits for Fiscal Year 2018.
In 2015, facing a similar situation, Congress passed a budget deal that raised the caps for Fiscal Years 2016 and 2017. In order to ensure that education and other programs that serve our most vulnerable are funded at an appropriate level moving forward, a new budget deal must be cut.
